Great Collector Interview #1: Marie/RedFlynn

January 28th, 2010 · 5 Comments · Collector, Custom, Interview

I am pretty sure many of you know who is behind this picture!

Marie had to be the first Blythe collector of our series. She is the one who made me think about interviewing Blythe collectors as soon as I saw her amazing collection on Flickr a few months ago.

On top of that, she takes gorgeous pictures and makes fabulous artistic compositions. She has also customized a few stunning girls, for fun first and for her own collection, then for friends.

Hi Marie! Could you tell us about yourself?

I’m Marie or RedFlynn on Flickr and the forums. I live in Canberra Australia, and work in science research at the local university here. Now that my kids are a bit older I have a bit more spare time and I’ve tried my hand at a few things recently: scrap-booking, mixed-media and digital art, and gourmet cooking to name a few.

How and when did you discover Blythe?

Around three years ago I was on Flickr checking out the art works there when I came across a girl who was primarily showing urban photographs, but happened to include a few Blythe photos. She had added some funny captions and the pics caught my eye.

Why did you start your collection?

For fun! I love the whimsical look of Blythe and the fun everyone has photographing them. I also love the huge community behind Blythe.

How long have you been collecting Blythe?

Almost three years I think!

How many Blythe dolls do you have in your own collection?

Oh I have too many to count LOL!  I started collecting mainly TLC girls who looked like they needed a good home, mostly EBL and BL girls, then came some Kenners and finally some customs and newer girls. I have a pretty good mix of each group.

Where and how do you store them?

Most are on a bookshelf in my study … some are scattered around the house cause they make me smile and my visitors like to check them out too!

What kind of Blythe dolls do you prefer?

Kenner, Neo Blythe (BL, EBL, SBL, RBL…), Custom? Hard one – I really do like them all! My all-time favourite girl is Rosey Red BL. She has such a cute look and always seems to have a cheery expression! I like the licca bodies, and have changed many of my Takara girls to the licca style. I love the unique look of the custom girls too, and who can resist a Kenner in need of love and attention!

How do you choose your customizers?

I have a few customs -each from a different designer. The last ones were from Vainilladolly and Happibug. I like customizers who have a real individual style … there are lots of great Blythe artists around and there are many more I’d like to add to my collection!

Which doll is the last one arrived in your collection?

My Happibug Summer Holiday custom. She has a cute bobbed hairstyle and a luscious look. She is gorgeous!

What’s the next Blythe you would like to acquire?

I have Mango and Guava on pre-order, for their fun hair color, but I may change my mind and go for a custom girl instead, and I’m always looking out for my heart’s desire … Parco!

Did you send any of your Blythe dolls for adoption or do you still have them all?

I have adopted some out recently as my collection was getting quite large and I need space for some new girls! LOL! Mostly I hang onto them tho, even if they are just sitting on the shelf. I love having them there and they always bring a smile.

A final word?

I just wanted to add my thanks to everyone in the Blythe community – the friends I’ve made on Flickr and the forums, the customizers and fashion designers, the other collectors and photographers from all over the world. You all make Blythe collecting so much more fun!

Thank you so much Marie for sharing your Blythe love with us. I can’t wait to see you back with new photos, ideas, and your whole-look doll challenge! Your pictures are always very inspiring, and I would like to end with a note of humor and Hollywood sweetness!
