Great Collector Interview #5: Amélie/Amloro16

May 21st, 2010 · No Comments · Collector, Custom, Interview

Amélie has a fabulous dolly collection, and her mohair custom dolls are among the most beautiful mohair Blythes in our community, with so much diversity in their hair color and their customizers. Amélie’s collection is also very interesting, lively and constantly changing, because she is always searching for another sweet face to fall in love with. She really has the soul of a collector. Thank you, Amélie, for being our guest today!

Hi Amélie! Can you introduce yourself ?

I live in Sceaux, a small town in the suburbs of Paris, in France. I’m a graphic designer but I am expecting a little girl for the end of August, so I don’t work any more. My dream job would be to open a small shop and sell designer’s creations for children and adults who still are young at heart.

I love travels, traveling for real and in my head. If I could, I would travel all the time!  I often need to live in my imagination… sometimes real life is too serious for me! That is why my Blythe dolls are so important for me. They are some small dumb spirits! When I was a little girl, I didn’t have any plastic doll such as Barbie because my mother hated that kind of doll… what a pity! I am catching up now! ;)

How and when did you discover Blythe?

I discovered Blythe in 2001 through the Sony advertising campaign for the Mini Disc. I remember that there were billboards in the Parisian subway. I found these big heads with big eyes so funny. Love at first sight! I was looking for a job at the same period, and I remember that I wanted to accept a job because there was one of these posters in their office, and even though  that job was really not interesting! I am crazy! At the end of 2005, I found and bought (of course !) a bag and a keychain with Blythe pictures on them in a design market in Stockholm. I was like a kid who found a treasure! Then, at the end of 2006, I read an article about Japanese dolls including Blythe dolls… I was super excited about it. I needed to buy one Blythe!

She symbolizes freedom and independence, and her Walkman is the vehicle by which she expresses her individuality through her choice of music” said Nicola Andrews, trade marketing and marketing communications manager, Sony Consumer Product Group.

When and why did you start your collection?

I went on eBay and on a multitude of websites. I found a primadolly Aubrey on a French website. I was in love with Star Dancer but she was too expensive for me: around $155 including shipping costs! Hahahahaaa! When I see what I can spend now, it’s really funny! I bought Aubrey, not my favorite one, but in my budget. When I received her, I was really disappointed. I believed that the head would be completely round and not so flat! LOL! Poor Aubrey! She was definitively not my dream Blythe. I sent her later to Isidora Morales and she became my Audrey Tutu, but she doesn’t live with me anymore. A few days ago, I bought my Star Dancer!

How many Blythe dolls do you have in your own collection?

I need to count… just one minute… or maybe more… Ok! I have 44 Blythes at home now (I sold or traded 27 dolls since I started my collection). In details, I have 32 customs: 4 BL, 2 EBL, 2 SBL, 4 RBL. I have adopted more customs than I thought… hum… I might need to find a balance… I need more stock Blythes!

Where and how do you store them?

All my dolls are nude in boxes or in Blythe cases. I am always afraid of stains on their bodies, and those boxes are in my room. Sometimes, some of my girls move around on my desk or on my drawer chest because I need to know they are just near me ! Sometimes, a lot of my girls are all around the room to try some new clothes and some new hairstyles. I would like a shelf just for them but, with the baby girl who arrives soon, it’s absolutely not possible… maybe later in a new flat.

What kind of Blythe dolls do you prefer?

It’s really difficult to tell. I love BLs of course (Parco is THE/MY dream girl…), and RBL stock dolls. Custom EBLs may be my faves, but custom RBLs are great too… Actually, I think I love sad/thoughtful girls (custom or not). But the mold is not really important. Something happens when I see a new Blythe… or not!

Who did you ask to create the custom dolls you have and how do you choose your customizers?

I asked Isidora Morales to customize 3 of my Blythes (Audrey Tutu / Michelle Mabelle / Mathilde). I asked Olga/vainilladolly once too  for Jeanne Austin, and Tiina  for Kiwi who just arrived. My other girls were already customized when I adopted them.

I think I really like to discover some new Blythes already “alive”. Each time I see a new custom Blythe, I know right away if she is for me or not, it’s easier… something in her expression and her eyes touches my heart or not. It is a very impulsive feeling. This is not totally the same when I ask someone to customize one of my dolls. The most important to me is not really the customizer but the doll herself. But if I could I would like to adopt one Blythe per customizer! I love their work and I am always very impressed by their artistic skills.

Which Blythe is the last one arrived in your collection?

I recently received my “twins” Soda and Kiwi made by the talented Tiina. They are so cute and funny. I love this kind of face! And I just got my custom Blythe made by Kate/Moofala. A really gorgeous redhead, according to me! ;)

Which one would you like to have next?

I would love the next Neo Blythe: “ahcahcum zukin”. I don’t like her outfit but I do love her make up and eyechips… or maybe another custom Blythe!

Did you send any of your Blythe dolls for adoption or do you still have them all?

Yes I did, and I don’t like that. I would like to keep them all. But I have no choice sometimes. The only good thing is when I see pictures of my dolls in their new family. I love seeing them (safe!) in a new place.

What do you like the most in collecting Blythe?

My dolls of course! Seriously, I adore my Blythes and I really like taking photos but I also like to meet new people on Flickr and discovering new artists (customizers, fashion designers, illustrators… ). There is a bunch of artistic people in this “Blythe world” and it’s very fulfilling and rewarding.

MERCI Amélie for sharing your love for Blythe and telling us about the story of your amazing collection. Your custom dolls are gorgeous and have so much character. I also love that most of them have been created by customizers I had never heard about before and never seen in any other collection. Thank you very much for letting me discover new talents!
